Sinn Fein should exercise the powers NI currently has: Hamilton

05 July 2018

DUP MLA Simon Hamilton accused Sinn Fein of willingly handing powers to Westminster rather than attempt to govern responsibly. It comes after Sinn Fein claimed the UK government was engaged in a “power grab” for post-Brexit devolution.

The Strangford MLA said, “Sinn Fein’s claims that the Government is engaged in a Brexit “power grab” only serve to highlight that republicans have abdicated responsibility and willingly surrendered power.

It is yet another example of Sinn Fein attempting to deflect attention from the real issue – their triple boycott of the Assembly, the Executive and of Westminster. Powers cannot be stripped away from Northern Ireland when Sinn Fein have willingly handed them over rather than attempt to govern responsibly on behalf of all the people of Northern Ireland.

If Mairtin O’Muilleor or anyone else from Sinn Fein wishes to be taken seriously then he and his colleagues should restore devolution and demonstrate a willingness to exercise the powers we currently have.

The DUP will continue to use its influence to secure the best outcome for Northern Ireland. We would prefer to have a Northern Ireland Executive putting its voice forward but Sinn Fein’s triple boycott means they appear content for us to work alone in delivering for the people of Northern Ireland.”
