No place for paramilitary organisations: Robinson

31 May 2018

Responding to the assessment of the Chief Constable that the IRA still has structures in place, DUP East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson said,

Gavin Robinson MP

Spokesman on Justice, Home Affairs and Human Rights.

Gavin Robinson

“The Chief Constable is well placed with the facts on existing criminal activity in Northern Ireland. It is deeply disturbing to consider that terrorist godfathers still pull the strings of republicanism.

Paramilitary organisations cannot continue to exist in Northern Ireland. There is no place for them. No one wants terrorist activity in their neighbourhoods.

Glorifying terrorism and attending IRA commemorations gives credence to those who still cling to the IRA. This is a deliberate act by the SF leadership to placate the old guard. It creates a breeding ground for IRA ideology to reach future generations and propagates a belief that their murderous actions were justified. Terrorism is never justified. Not then and not now.

Whether it is to sanction the brutal murder and clinical clean up of Paul Quinn or Kevin McGuigan, there is no place for an IRA army council structure or any other army council in 2018. The PSNI should move against anyone still clinging to terror.”
