DUP Leader Arlene Foster MLA was speaking at Policy Exchange in London where Lord Bew published a paper about breaking the Brexit impasse.
Speaking at the event Mrs Foster said,
“On 29 January 2019 the House of Commons backed the Brady amendment calling for alternative arrangements to the backstop.
The backstop is the problem. It needs dealt with.
The Conservative Party leadership is a matter for the Conservative Party. But whoever is the next Prime Minister will have to deal with the backstop.
If the Union is to be strengthened, then the backstop must be dealt with as in its current form it both undermines the economic and constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom.
The greatest falsehood at the heart of the backstop is that it is required by the Belfast Agreement. This is possibly the greatest lie in politics today.
Lord Bew’s paper is correct in that the backstop runs contrary to the principle of consent which is at the heart of the Belfast Agreement. Too many people are happy to just pick and choose the parts of the Belfast Agreement which suit their argument.
The paper has reasonable points which should be taken into consideration by the incoming Prime Minister because first and foremost we must always work to strengthen and protect of the Union.”
