DUP spokesperson on Justice, Emma Little Pengelly MP has called for the UK Government to take urgent action to address the continuing unfair reduction of compensation payments to those with catastrophic injuries.
She said, “Northern Ireland is being left behind on this issue, with those who need financial support to deal with life with catastrophic and life changing injuries receiving significantly less compensation than elsewhere across the UK.
Due to Sinn Fein’s boycott of the political institutions, the unfair discount rate of 2.5% remains in place in Northern Ireland when it was removed elsewhere in the UK. Under the current situation, this means that those who are most in need, having received financial settlement in recognition of the serious impact of their injuries, would be potentially millions of pounds less well off over their lifetime."
Speaking in the House of Commons, Emma Little Pengelly MP highlighted that “We are talking about a hugely significant difference, particularly for those who have suffered catastrophic injuries through no fault of their own. I have established, and it has been confirmed by the Government that they can legislate to change this. I urge them to act urgently to address this great injustice in the Civil Liability Bill.”
