Arlene Foster MLA

Leader of the Democratic Unionist Party and First Minister of Northern Ireland

Arlene Foster

“I am shocked and saddened to learn of Patrick Johnston’s death. My sympathies are with his wife and sons who grieve the loss of a dear husband and father today.  They are in my thoughts and prayers today.

As an academic he was inspirational in the field of cancer research and was a dynamic Vice Chancellor of Queen’s University.  His loss will be felt not just at home here in Northern Ireland but right around the world where he was hugely respected.

Myself and many colleagues had the pleasure of working closely with him over the years and we always found him willing to give freely of his time to help make Northern Ireland a better place.

The work that will continue at Queens on cancer research will be a legacy to Patrick and an inspiration to many others who will follow behind him. That work can be the greatest tribute to someone whose career was dedicated to the benefit of others.”
