Speaking after the launch the North Belfast MP said, “The importance of successful City Deals to Northern Ireland was why we ensured they were included within the Confidence and Supply Agreement signed with the Conservative Party.

Following the Confidence and Supply Agreement, last year’s budget saw further progress and since then there has been unprecedented collaboration between parties, Councils, universities, the public and private sectors to put forward the proposals launched today.

A successful City Deal can provide a once in a generation opportunity to accelerate economic growth, and provide a platform for Northern Ireland to be a globally competitive economy. It has the potential to create 20,000 new jobs.

Projects included in the City Deal proposal will address the productivity gap, improve levels of innovation and R&D, develop our tourism sector and ensure we match skills with future job markets. We can become genuinely world class in areas such as digital/ICT, cyber security, creative industries, live and health services, advanced manufacturing and tourism.

Such a boost will also benefit our city centres and retail trade that has been dealt an unfortunate blow in recent months following the Primark fire.

The DUP will continue to use our influence at Westminster to see the maximum financial commitment from central government. With continued support from the private sector and collaboration between all partners we can continue to move this process forward to a successful outcome.”
