Following the event Mrs Cameron, who is also Chair on the Assembly's All Party Group on domestic violence said,

"Domestic violence is a blight on our society, it is estimated that domestic and sexual violence costs Northern Ireland a staggering £931 million, every single year. There is an obvious human cost here too, for women, men and children affected by domestic violence and the consequences can be devastating.

With my roles within the Justice Committee and indeed on the All Party Group on Domestic Violence, I am delighted that we are going to be looking at legislation dealing with coercive control and a specific domestic violence offence amongst other measures to seriously tackle the scourge on our society that is domestic violence.

It is appropriate today as we talk about domestic violence that we understand and accept that this issue is not one that only happens in our towns and cities, this issue is very much alive within the whole community which includes our rural community, who may even be more vulnerable as victims given the rural isolation and the tight communities that exist.

This is why I am pleased to be present and involved in some small way at this event in Greenmount Agricultural College today, recognising the needs of Northern Ireland’s rural community which is just as great as the need in our urban areas.

It is vitally important that we support our whole community and part of that support comes from education, awareness raising and ultimately empowering individuals to recognise what is happening and know that it is right and proper to speak out against domestic violence."
