Pam Cameron said:

“With around 1 in 30 children in Northern Ireland now living with autism it is vitally important that teachers are trained in how best to ensure they can help children with autism reach their potential.

School can be a daunting experience for any child and key to settling in school is building relationships with teachers and fellow pupils and ensuring the environment is conducive to learning. It is key in all of this that the teacher has the necessary understanding and methods to ensure every child enjoys their school years and gains as much from them as possible, both in terms of education but also socially.

I welcome this campaign and would encourage the Department to make this change. I know from speaking to teachers that, despite the pressures they are under, they would really value this training. Now is the time for the Department to meet this need.”
