Commenting on a report from the Department of Justice on the perceptions of communities in Northern Ireland towards paramilitary activity, East Belfast DUP MLA Joanne Bunting said,
“The Department of Justice report demonstrates once again that it is those who live in communities where paramilitaries are active who suffer the greatest impact from them.
Whilst a small number of people may mistakenly believe that paramilitary groups keep their area safe, it is very clear that many more people feel they attempt to control communities and create fear and intimidation. What is common across all communities however is that the vast majority of people want to see our society rid of these groups.
The Executive was right to put in place efforts to tackle paramilitary activity. Alongside support for those who want to move away from paramilitarism, it must be alongside the knowledge that those who refuse to move away from such activity will face the full weight of the law.”
