Simon was a Councillor on Ards Borough Council from 2005 until 2011, representing Newtownards town.  On the Council Simon served as the Chairman of the Council’s Rates sub-committee.

This is Simon’s second term as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly.  In 2010 Simon was the winner of the Slugger O’Toole ‘Up and Coming’ Politician of the Year award.  He is also currently the DUP’s Director of Elections.

Simon served as the Assembly Private Secretary for the Department of Finance and Personnel prior to his appointment as Finance Minister in June 2013.

He stood down as Finance Minister and was appointed as Health Minister in a reshuffle on 11th May 2015. Following the 2016 Assembly Election Simon was appointed as Minister for the newly formed Department for the Economy.
