Sammy is a well-known figure in East Belfast, having extensive experience working with a wide range of community, voluntary and church groups in the constituency. Sammy is a founding member of the East Belfast Interface Group where he worked to address community conflict and encourage dialogue between unionists and nationalists living in those interface areas.
Sammy was first elected to represent the people of East Belfast at the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2011 and was re-elected in 2016. He is a member of the Committee for Justice.
