DUP East Antrim MP Sammy Wilson has called on the Chancellor of the Dutchy of Lancaster Michael Gove to mirror the Republic of Ireland’s approach to tariffs at the border if we exit the EU on a no deal basis.
DUP Parliamentary Spokesman on Education, Treasury and the Department of Work & Pensions.
Mr Wilson said,
“The Republic of Ireland intends to impose full tariffs on goods coming into their jurisdiction yet without any border checks, if that’s the case why will this government not do likewise for goods coming into Northern Ireland from the Republic of Ireland?
The current approach by the Government places Northern Ireland businesses at a disadvantage, will lead to a loss of tax revenue, make Northern Ireland a backdoor to Great Britain and alleviates pressure on the Republic of Ireland to reach a sensible deal.
This would be the same Irish government which has displayed incredible intransigence throughout these negotiations.”
