DUP Lagan Valley MP Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has said of the SDLP/SF pact that a vote for the SDLP is now akin to a vote for SF in this election. Mr Donaldson also urged Colum Eastwood to clarify the SDLP position on the Shankill bomber being part of their canvassing teams.
Parliamentary Chief Whip; Spokesman on Defence and business in the House of Commons
Mr Donaldson said,
“Sean Kelly has been canvassing for SF in North Belfast but will he now be canvassing on behalf of the SDLP too? I accept everyone can have a past and can change but Sean Kelly has shown no remorse for murdering nine innocent people, including two children? Do the SDLP endorse his involvement in support of their pact?
Given the SDLP / SF electoral pact, will Sean Kelly be welcome in South Belfast by Claire Hanna? Mr Eastwood must clarify.
The SDLP and SF will stoop to any depth to damage the DUP. Claire Hanna may hope to benefit from the SDLP/SF pact but the SDLP in South Down and Foyle certainly will not benefit. Unionists will be very wary of endorsing this pact.
The DUP stands in this election on a record of delivery. We used our influence to get £1.5bn more for our schools, roads and hospitals but the SF legacy is one of blocking devolution and boycotting parliament. The SDLP should move out of the SF shadow.”
