Upper Bann representatives, David Simpson MP and Carla Lockhart MLA have praised the work of the emergency services during a fire in the High Street area of Lurgan.
Upper Bann MP David Simpson said, “I have been in contact with the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service who have been working to tackle the blaze and are now assessing the structural damage of the building and surrounding properties.
The scale of fire was significant and we must allow the emergency services time to carry it their investigations but I am assured that the area will reopen as soon as possible.
I would like to pay tribute to our emergency services who were on the scene quickly and dealt with the blaze efficiently.”
The blaze broke out close to the office of DUP MLA Carla Lockhart. After speaking with the Police and Fire and Rescue Service Carla Lockhart said, “I want to thank the Fire Service for their swift action in getting the blaze under control.
As well as being a commercial area there are people living in flats above some of these shops and if the fire had spread, it could have been a serious risk to life.
The road has been closed to motorists whilst this is ongoing. I have been liaising with the PSNI who are aware of the number of church services about to take place in that area. They are working to ensure that these will be accommodated and will reopen the road when the area is safe.
Once again I want to thank both the Fire Service and PSNI for their quick and professional actions during this incident.”
