Lagan Valley MLA Edwin Poots welcomed the court ruling allowing the Executive Office to pay compensation to the victims of Historical Institutional Abuse.
He said, "This matter has dragged on far to long, and vulnerable people have been put through more stress and pressure as a consequence of the non implementation of the Hart Inquiry. Whilst the problem was caused by those who crashed the Assembly and refuse to reinstate it, feet dragging by the previous Secretary of State Karen Bradley and lack of direction in the civil service has exacerbated matters. Todays ruling removes any excuse not to make redress.
The court ruling does not obviate the need for Westminster to complete the legislation it has started, it is also imperative that the bill dealing with Historical Abuse is completed before Parliament is dissolved. This issue is above politics and every effort must be made to properly and appropriately help the victims."
