“The backstop is both unnecessary and is damaging. The European Union have been very clear that the backstop is designed to keep Northern Ireland as part of the Customs Union territory of the EU.

The Prime Minister gave an assurance within the Joint Report that no new regulatory barriers could develop between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom unless supported by the Northern Ireland Executive and Assembly.

Anything which places barriers to trade between Great Britain and Northern Ireland would not only be detrimental to businesses but would weaken the constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom.

The DUP wants to see a deal in place as we leave the European Union and one which will work for all parts of the United Kingdom, as well as our nearest neighbours in the European Union. If the Prime Minister holds to her commitments then she can secure a good deal for Northern Ireland and for the UK as a whole.”
