“The neurology patient recall by the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust will be alarming to individuals involved and impact on their families and loved ones too.

It is welcome that scores of additional clinics are being provided over coming weeks to ensure patients are seen quickly and fully assessed. I trust patients can receive reassurance when they see a doctor, and that the vast majority will need no alteration to their management. I encourage those with any concerns to contact the Trust through the helpline they have put in place.

I am grateful to the Chief Executive of the Trust, Martin Dillon, for keeping me updated on the situation and on the actions being taken.

This episode demonstrates the importance of having effective controls in place, ongoing monitoring of professional performance and the benefits of people speaking up when they feel something isn’t quite right. People should be mindful that serious errors are rare in modern health care, and the overwhelming number of patients every day across Northern Ireland receive really good quality care”
