East Belfast MP Gavin Robinson has welcomed confirmation that the Historical Institutional Abuse (Northern Ireland) Bill will be debated in Parliament. It is expected that the Bill will pass all Commons stages tomorrow.

He said, “Last week there was a great deal of disappointment amongst those who had campaigned so valiantly on this issue, that it appeared this Bill would fall when Parliament dissolves for the election. Nigel Dodds spoke clearly on behalf of the DUP when he called on the Prime Minister to ensure that action was taken on behalf of the victims.

This is an issue that has cross-party and cross-community support so it is to be warmly welcomed that the Bill will be taken as the first item of business, after any Urgent Questions and statements on what will be the final sitting day of this Parliament.

Given the widespread support for the Bill the challenge was securing Parliamentary time for the debate. Thankfully this will now take place and I hope that we can finally secure definite progress for those who suffered so grievously and who have campaigned so tirelessly.”
