Speaking after attending the service in West Kirk Presbyterian Church to mark the 25th anniversary of the bombing DUP Leader Arlene Foster MLA said,
“The pain on the Shankill Road is as raw today as it was a quarter of a century ago when those nine innocent lives were taken by the Provisional IRA. The pain however is matched by the strength and determination of a community to stand with those lives were torn apart on that sunny Saturday afternoon.
It was not just those who carried the bomb into Frizzell’s fish shop that brought death to the Shankill Road however. Like so many other cases there were many people involved in planning and perpetrating this act of terror. Families still seek full justice, but even in recent years there have been attempts by some to pass blame from terrorists onto the state for this atrocity. It is most important that the voices of innocent victims are heard above all others.
Everyone is mindful today that this terrible atrocity sparked retaliation, creating other innocent victims in other parts of Northern Ireland. Our thoughts are with all those today who continue to suffer.”
