DUP Upper Bann MLA Carla Lockhart has expressed her sadness at the loss of two more lives on the A1 between Banbridge and Newry.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon involving three vehicles on the northbound carriageway. One elderly gentleman passed away at the scene and a middle aged lady also died some time later in hospital.
The A1 is one of the busiest roads in Northern Ireland and is a key strategic link road between Belfast and Dublin. Over the last number of years many of the crossing points have been closed in favour of underpass or overpass crossing and the Upper Bann MLA believes that all need to be reviewed following this latest tragedy.
Speaking after the incident Carla Lockhart said,
“We have yet another tragedy on the A1 and more homes plunged into grief. It saddens me at this terrible loss of life. My thoughts are first and foremost with the families directly impacted.
Great progress has been made in ensuring the A1’s safety has been improved over the past 20 years however we want zero road deaths on this stretch of road. The volume of traffic it carries on a daily basis makes it one of the busiest in Northern Ireland.
Discussions have been taking place on how we can close off all the crossover points without inconveniencing local residents and frequent users. It is essential that capital money is made available to carry out the necessary works.
We cannot allow more families to go through what these families are now going through. It is not only the families of those who lost their lives but the other drivers who were also involved who have to live with the trauma of this incident.”
