East Belfast DUP MP Gavin Robinson and Titanic Councillor George Dorrian have both criticised those responsible for the closure of Avoniel Leisure Centre today.
Mr Robinson said, “This behaviour is wrong and should not be a part of our, or any, community. Today, leisure centre staff were going to work to provide a service to the people of East Belfast. They should not have been subjected to this criminal behaviour.
Those responsible should face up to the consequences of their disgraceful actions. They are hurting their own community.”
Cllr George Dorrian added, “It is totally unacceptable that facilities for the community are held to ransom by any group. This is a popular community leisure centre which is well used by families and the people who live here.
We want to see its immediate reopening without the fear of this behaviour continuing. I am happy to liaise with all agencies and groups but bonfire organisers should be realistic and need to understand that what happened today is not acceptable in our society today.”
