Fundamental problem is the backstop - Robinson

21 January 2019

DUP MP for East Belfast Gavin Robinson said,

Gavin Robinson MP

Spokesman on Justice, Home Affairs and Human Rights.

Gavin Robinson

“We do not recognise reports about renegotiating the Belfast Agreement. I am not aware of anyone seriously suggesting such a step.

Many of those shouting loudest following today’s speculative media reports, were strangely silent about how the backstop rides a coach and horses through the Belfast Agreement by effectively redrawing the border.

People in hysterics today about the Belfast Agreement should at least be consistent and join us in opposing the backstop.

The fundamental problem is the backstop. The focus should be on changes to the Withdrawal Agreement, in order to get a deal which is in the national interest. We want to get a deal which works for the entire United Kingdom as well as our neighbours in the Republic of Ireland.”
