The Democratic Unionist Party launched a ‘Friends of Gibraltar’ group during its Party Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel last weekend.
Party Leader, The Right Honourable Arlene Foster MLA was joined by the Gibraltarian Minister for Housing and Equality, Samantha Sacramento MP, for the launch event
Chair of the Infrastructure Committee
North Belfast MLA William Humphrey, who hosted the launch, said it was a demonstration that the DUP would stand up for the interests and wishes of the people of Gibraltar during the current Brexit process and beyond.
Mr Humphrey commented, “Throughout the process of leaving the European Union, our paramount concern is for the protection and endurance of our Union within the United Kingdom and our opposition to any arrangement which would weaken that precious Union.
“Our interest extends naturally to the Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories, a number of which we were pleased to have represented at our Party Conference, and none more enthusiastically than Gibraltar.
“It was very appropriate and timely that we should take the opportunity to formally launch our DUP Friends of Gibraltar group as a demonstration that we will stand by and stand up for the Gibraltarian people. I had the pleasure to visiting Gibraltar along with our Party Leader earlier this year, being warmly received by the Chief Minster Fabian Picardo MP. He had planned to be at our Conference, but had to attend to the political manoeuvres by Spain over the weekend, and we were delighted to welcome Gibraltarian Minister Samantha Sacramento MP and officials from Gibraltar House in London.
“We will continue provide our full support for the loyal people and Government of Gibraltar and to ensure that their democratic wishes are recognised and respected.”
