Responding to a statement by the European Council confirming that UK citizens will be granted visa free travel to the EU for up to 90 days in any Brexit scenario, DUP MEP Diane Dodds said:
Member of the EU Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, Substitute member of the EU Fisheries Committee
“This announcement is a welcome development. It builds on the reciprocal commitment provided by the UK Government in granting European citizens the opportunity to come to the UK for short stays after Brexit.
Such clarity is constructive and whilst belated it helps to dispel unhelpful rhetoric around the potential impact of a no deal. This rhetoric only serves to play on fears and generate unnecessary uncertainty within communities.
Sadly, not for the first time today’s positive pledges have been overshadowed by the use of inappropriate and unhelpful language on the part of the EU. To describe Gibraltar as a ‘colony of the British Crown’ is disgraceful.
The people of Gibraltar have consistently asserted a democratic right to retain their constitutional relationship with the UK. Its British heritage, values and freedoms should be protected. It is high time the EU understood that in negotiations language is important. It is time the voice and position of Gibraltar was respected.”
