DUP Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds has welcomed the Prime Minister’s rejection again of the EU’s legal interpretation of the backstop and commitment there can be no constitutional, political or regulatory differences between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

Speaking after raising it in Parliament following the Prime Minister’s statement to the House of Commons the North Belfast MP said, “The DUP wants to see a sensible Brexit that delivers the will of the people as expressed in the referendum and which strengthens the Union which matters; the union between Northern Ireland and Great Britain. We want a strengthened United Kingdom with control of our laws, our borders and our money.
Whilst the Chequers communique referenced “the backstop” we trust the White Paper when published, will not give any succour to the EU’s so-called ‘backstop’ which the government has rightly declared is unacceptable.
We welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to ensuring that the Brexit deal in no way weakens the United Kingdom, but it is also vitally important that EU’s interpretation of the backstop is rejected and ensure there is no border down the Irish sea.”
