Speaking in the European Parliament today Northern Ireland’s DUP MEP Diane Dodds said,
Member of the EU Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, Substitute member of the EU Fisheries Committee
“Another European Council, another deal and an even bigger capitulation by Boris Johnson.
The Prime Minister who on the 2nd October said that the UK should leave the EU “whole and entire” has now signed up to a deal where Northern Ireland would have to apply the whole of the EU customs code and NI businesses will pay EU tariffs on goods used in the manufacturing process. Furthermore yesterday - after checking what he had negotiated - the Brexit Secretary confirmed that goods coming from NI to GB will be subject to additional paperwork with estimated costs of up to £65 per declaration.
Given that 70% of all of NI’s trade is with GB, this is a huge barrier to the NI economy. This agreement will create a separation of NI, in customs and regulation, from its own internal market.
Northern Ireland must not become a spectator on any UK trade deal. For this to be the case would be a shameful position for any Prime Minister to support. Boris Johnson used to say that “no British PM” could ever sign up to it but he has now done a deal which does exactly that.”
