Causeway Coast and Glens DUP Cllr Alan Robinson has branded a fresh row on signage due for Limavady as deeply regrettable, after Nationalists voted against the inclusion of the ‘Londonderry Air’.
He said, “Whilst some talk about equality and respect, there has been little evidence of either when it comes to new Council signage for the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough.
The Londonderry Air is a world renowned piece of music, played at many community events and is associated with Northern Ireland. We should recognise that this piece of music was created in Limavady.
Unfortunately, we see both Sinn Fein and SDLP making superficial arguments as to the inclusion of the words ‘Londonderry Air’ on Limavady’s new signage. This is despite the fact that ‘Danny Boy’ was also included to reflect the Nationalist identity. This is childish. It is wrong but regrettably predictable, for those Councillors to oppose the signage.
I would ask those who talk much about equality and respect to give an account to the public, detailing why this signage is offensive when it has both the inclusion of ‘Londonderry Air’ as well as ‘Danny Boy’."
