East Londonderry MP has encouraged the government to help promote a “summer of sport” within East Londonderry this year.
DUP Spokesman on International Development and Cabinet Office
He raised the issue during questions to the Department for Digital, Culture Media & Sport today in the House of Commons.
Afterwards Mr Campbell said, “This year the Open Championship will return to Northern Ireland for the first time in 70 years when it is played at Royal Portrush. The North West 200 will also celebrate its 90th anniversary around the famous triangle course.
The work of the Northern Ireland Executive, and particularly Arlene Foster as Enterprise Minister was absolutely key to securing the return of the Open Championship and the North West is not only the largest sporting event in Northern Ireland but is one of the world’s fastest road races.
Both events will bring visitors to Northern Ireland and to one of the most scenic coastlines to be found anywhere. The summer will provide a fantastic opportunity to showcase Northern Ireland and particularly in the absence of a local Executive it is important that the Government takes this opportunity to promote what will be a fantastic summer of sport on the north coast.”
