The DUP’s Upper Bann MLA Jonathan Buckley has welcomed the latest unemployment figures for Northern Ireland.
Mr Buckley said,
“These statistics are a good sign for Northern Ireland. A decline in Northern Ireland’s unemployment rate of 1% must be welcomed. At 3.4%, it is lower than the Republic of Ireland and that of the European Union. Indeed, the United Kingdom as a whole is experiencing some of its lowest unemployment rates and highest employment rates on record.
Northern Ireland shouldn’t rest on its laurels though. We need to build on these figures and tackle our high rates of economic inactivity. This has been a long-term problem but that’s where a devolved Assembly would be much more flexible on addressing the symptoms. An Executive back at Stormont, with a locally elected Minister in place would help develop strategies to deliver for all areas of Northern Ireland.”
