DUP Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds has welcomed a restatement of the government’s commitment to the economic and constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom.

The comments came during Northern Ireland Questions in Parliament where the DUP MP also described any separation of Northern Ireland away from the rest of the UK as “inflicting economic misery”.

Speaking afterwards Mr Dodds said, “The government has been very clear that the economic and constitutional integrity of the UK will remain intact. That will be welcomed by every right-thinking person because it makes sense constitutionally but also economically.

The vast bulk of Northern Ireland’s external sales go to the Great Britain market. Indeed, more goes to Great Britain than to the Republic of Ireland, European Union and rest of the world combined. Anyone advocating that Northern Ireland should remain in the customs union whilst the rest of the UK leaves would inflict economic misery on everyone in Northern Ireland.

When Leo Varadkar talks about “not leaving Northern Ireland behind” what he actually refers to is sucking Northern Ireland back into the institutions of the European Union whilst the rest of the UK leaves, which would be economically disastrous for all our citizens.”
