Speaking in the debate at Westminster on the calling of a General Election DUP Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds MP outlined the choice facing voters in Northern Ireland.
DUP Deputy Leader, Leader of the DUP Parliamentary Party, Spokesman on Reform and Constitutional issues and Foreign Affairs
He said, “While the Prime Minister’s announcement of an election during political discussions is unfortunate, we as a Party respond positively to the Secretary of State who has stated that he wishes that the talks continue. We are ready to form an Executive in Northern Ireland. We do not believe in setting red lines and preconditions above issues affecting health, education and the future of our public services. So that Executive is being held up by others.
In terms of Brexit, Northern Ireland’s position is different to any other part of the United Kingdom. We believe it is imperative that Northern Ireland’s voice is heard strongly. That’s why it is such a tragedy that Sinn Fein has walked away from the Executive, collapsed the Assembly, forced us into an unnecessary Assembly election, boycotts Westminster and then demands a special status which has been rejected by the European Parliament and the Irish Government. The DUP will be at Westminster to provide the strong voice Northern Ireland needs.
This election will provide clarity on the importance of the Union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The most effective way to support the Union is to rally behind the DUP on 8th June.
It is now essential that people in Northern Ireland recognise there is a clear choice between a Party that has walked away and abandoned its responsibilities on a number of occasions or a Party that takes its seats here, takes its stand on issues affecting them and speaks for the people of Northern Ireland. The DUP provides that representation."
